Restorative Practices for the Places we Live, Learn, & Work

Restorative practices is a vehicle that offers hope to those affected by conflict or violent and aggressive acts. It puts repairing the harm done to relationships and people over and above the need for assigning blame and dispensing punishment. Hope for a different tomorrow is what brings participants together to talk through how these acts have affected them. Reconciliation after conflict is not easy but is the only way to fully restore peace for the victim, the offender and the community.

The key values of RJ are: to create an ethos of respect, inclusion, accountability and taking responsibility; commitment to relationships; impartiality; being non-judgmental; collaboration; empowerment; and emotional articulacy. The practice of Restorative Justice is used successfully in schools, the workplace and in the juvenile justice system. Offering an understanding of RJ practices, participants will also experience and develop skills in:
  • active listening
  • facilitating dialogue & problem solving
  • listening to and expressing emotion
  • empowering others to take ownership of problems
